Making Adjustments: Tips on editing and image without destroying the original image
When making changes to an image, if it's done incorrectly each change made will strip the image of valuable pixels, resulting in viewer pixels to work with; When this process is repeated enough times it will eventually leave the image destroyed permanently and unable to work with.

It is a good practice not to destroy the original pixels of any image you are working with.

Don't:
1. Use the adjustment menu from the top menu bar.
Images > Adjustment > ...
2. Use the keyboard shortcuts:
  • Ctrl, Alt, Shift = windows
  • /
  • Cmd, Opt, Shift = Mac
  1. Levels: Ctrl+L / Cmd+L
  2. Curves: Ctrl+M / Cmd+M
  3. Hue/Saturation: Ctrl+U / Cmd+U
  4. Color Balance: Ctrl+B / Cmd+B
  5. Black & White: Alt+Shift+Ctrl+B / Opt+Shift+Cmd+B
  6. Invert: Ctrl+I / Cmd+I
  7. Desaturation: Shift+Ctrl+U / Shift+Cmd+U
Do:
1. Open the adjustments panel and work from there.
Window > Adjustments
2. Create a new adjustment layer from the bottom of the layers panel.
  1. Open the Layers Panel: Window > Layers || Keyboard Short-cut: F7
  2. Locate the adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel: it's a two toned circle.

Another way to preserve original images is to work with full sized copies of the original and keep the original image far away from the photoshop files.
Save for Web: Optimizing resolution without destroying the original image
It's the best way to resize an image without harming the original!

When working with images and the web, we work to find the best file type & size for our specific needs. Using the save for web option within photoshop is a wonderful workaround for optimizing images without changing the original image.
To Open:
  1. File > Save for Web...
  2. Windows keyboard shortcut: Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S
  3. Mac keyboard shortcut: Cmd+Shift+Alt+S
